Autonomy is an essential ingredient of human happiness. It gives us the ability to implement our decisions.

At an individual level, autonomy implies that the basic needs of survival, freedom, dignity, and expression are minimally fulfilled.

Autonomy itself is not a guarantee of social happiness, but at least it guarantees that even the less favored have a possibility to reach happiness following an own path.
